Any questions?

A business savings account lets a company hold surplus cash separately from its current account and earn interest on it. As with personal savings, options include easy-access, notice and fixed-term accounts.

Compare the interest rate (AER), how quickly you can access funds and any minimum or maximum balance. Choose based on how much cash you can set aside and how soon the business might need it.

Limits vary widely by provider. Some accounts have a low minimum to open, while others set high minimums or cap the balance that earns the headline rate, so check the terms before depositing.

Any doubts?

Yes. Interest on a business savings account is taxable. For a limited company it's treated as income and forms part of profits subject to Corporation Tax. Sole traders and partnerships pay Income Tax on the interest as part of their self-employed earnings. Unlike personal savers, businesses do not get a Personal Savings Allowance. This isn't tax advice — check with an accountant or HMRC.

Up to £120,000 per eligible business, per banking licence (since 1 December 2025), provided the account is with a UK-authorised bank. If your balance is higher, you can spread it across separate licensed banks to stay protected. Watch out for accounts that share a single licence (for example those powered by the same partner bank), as the limit applies across all deposits under that one licence.

Easy (instant) access lets you withdraw anytime, usually at a variable rate; notice accounts require a set period (e.g. 30, 95 or 180 days) before withdrawing; fixed-term (bond) accounts lock your money for a set period at a fixed rate, with no access until maturity. More commitment generally means a higher rate. Early access to a fixed-term account is usually not allowed or carries a penalty, so keep cash you may need in an easy-access or short-notice account.

Most business savings interest is now paid gross (no tax deducted), so the business declares and pays any tax due; interest is commonly calculated daily and paid monthly or annually. Check whether the quoted rate is AER (which assumes compounding over a year) and whether it's fixed or variable. Some accounts pay tiered rates — different AERs for different balance bands — and many headline 'up to' rates apply only to high balances or include a temporary bonus, so verify the current rate for your balance.

Many providers offer savings to sole traders and freelancers as well as limited companies, though eligibility and minimum deposits vary; you'll usually need to be a UK resident aged 18 or over and registered for your business type. Some savings accounts — especially app-based ones — can only be opened alongside that provider's business current account, while standalone accounts and deposit platforms don't require one. Deposit platforms also let you spread cash across multiple banks to stay within FSCS limits.
