Any questions?

An easy-access (or instant-access) savings account lets you pay in and withdraw money whenever you like, with few or no restrictions. Rates are usually variable, so the interest you earn can rise or fall over time.

Compare the interest rate (AER), how you can access your money and any minimum or maximum deposit. The best choice balances the rate against how soon you'll need the money, so match the account to your goal.

You can normally apply online in a few minutes with ID and your details, then fund it from your linked bank account. Some accounts need a minimum opening deposit, so check the terms before applying.

Any doubts?

Through the Personal Savings Allowance you can earn £1,000 of interest tax-free as a basic-rate taxpayer, £500 as higher-rate and £0 as additional-rate; some low earners also get the separate £5,000 starting rate for savings, and ISA interest is always tax-free. Interest above your allowance is taxable (HMRC usually collects it via your tax code) and can, in some cases, affect means-tested benefits. Those tax rates are set to rise from April 2027. This isn't tax advice.

Easy access lets you withdraw anytime (usually a variable rate); notice accounts need a set notice period (e.g. 30–95 days); fixed-rate bonds lock money for a term (e.g. 1–5 years) at a guaranteed rate; regular savers pay a higher rate on small monthly deposits. More restriction generally means a higher rate. When a bond matures, your provider offers options to withdraw, move or reinvest — if you do nothing, the balance often drops to a lower-rate account, so note the maturity date.

It depends. A cash ISA keeps interest permanently tax-free, which matters most if you've used up your Personal Savings Allowance or are a higher-rate taxpayer. A standard savings account may offer a higher headline rate, but interest above your allowance is taxed. With both savings rates and savings tax rising, ISAs are becoming more valuable for larger balances. This isn't financial advice.

For 2026/27 you can pay up to £20,000 across all your ISAs each tax year, and the full £20,000 can go into a cash ISA. From 6 April 2027 the cash ISA limit falls to £12,000 a year for under-65s (the other £8,000 can go into other ISA types), while those aged 65 and over keep the full £20,000. Since 6 April 2024 you can pay into more than one ISA of the same type in a year, as long as you stay within the allowance; transferring previous-year ISAs doesn't use it up.

Yes — up to £120,000 per person, per banking licence, under the FSCS (since 1 December 2025), as long as the provider is UK-authorised. Joint accounts are covered up to £240,000. If a savings platform is involved, protection depends on the underlying bank that holds your money. Spreading large balances across separate licensed banks keeps more of it protected.
