Business bank accounts for bad credit at a glance
A poor credit history doesn't automatically stop you opening a business bank account, because most accounts don't lend you money. Here's what matters in 2026:
Credit is checked most closely for overdrafts. Accounts without an overdraft often use only a soft credit search, or none, alongside identity and fraud checks.
Many refusals aren't about credit. Providers must run anti-money laundering and fraud checks, and a fraud marker or unclear business activity can lead to a refusal even with a good credit score.
There's no legal right to a business account. The right to a fee-free basic bank account applies to personal accounts only.
A county court judgment (CCJ) stays on the register for 6 years, unless you pay it in full within one month.
Since 28 April 2026, providers must usually give 90 days' notice and explain why before closing a payment account, except in cases such as suspected money laundering or fraud.
Can you get a business bank account with bad credit?
Yes, in many cases. A business bank account is a payment account, not a loan, so a missed payment or a CCJ on your credit file doesn't automatically mean you'll be refused. What makes the biggest difference is whether you apply for credit with the account.
What you apply for | Credit checks you can expect | Chance of approval with a poor credit history |
|---|---|---|
Business account with no overdraft | Identity and fraud checks; often a soft credit search, sometimes none | Usually the best chance |
Business account with an overdraft or credit card | Identity and fraud checks plus a hard credit search | Lower: the provider is deciding whether to lend you money |
Business loan or other borrowing | Full affordability assessment and hard credit search | Lowest |
General patterns, not the rules of a specific provider. Check each provider's application information before you apply.
Digital providers often focus on identity and business checks rather than credit history, and many don't offer overdrafts at all. High-street banks are more likely to run a full credit check, especially if you want an overdraft from day one. Applying without an overdraft first, and asking for one later once the account has a track record, is a common way to get started.
What do providers check when you apply?
Every provider checks who you are, what your business does and whether there are signs of fraud. Whose credit file it looks at depends on how your business is set up.
Business type | Whose credit history may be checked | Other checks |
|---|---|---|
Sole trader | Your personal credit file, because you and the business are the same legal person | Identity, address, business activity, fraud databases |
Limited company or LLP | The company's credit file, and often the personal files of directors and people with significant control | Companies House records, directors' identity, ownership, fraud databases |
Partnership | The partners' personal credit files | Identity of each partner, business activity, fraud databases |
Soft or hard search? A soft search isn't visible to other lenders and doesn't affect your credit score. A hard search is recorded on your credit file for 12 months and can be seen by other lenders, so several in a short time can make the next application harder.
Why are business account applications declined?
Providers don't always tell you why they declined an application, and the reason is often not your credit score. The most common reasons are:
Identity or address can't be verified, for example because details don't match your ID or the electoral roll.
A fraud marker. If your details are on a fraud prevention database such as Cifas's National Fraud Database, including as a victim of identity fraud, providers may refuse an application.
Unclear or higher-risk business activity. Some providers don't accept certain sectors, such as cryptocurrency, gambling, adult services or money transfer, or businesses that handle a lot of cash.
Ownership or location. Some providers only accept businesses registered and run in the UK, or owned by UK residents.
Credit history, mainly when you've asked for an overdraft or other credit.
Mismatched information, such as a different trading address on your application and at Companies House.
If you think a fraud marker or credit file error is behind a refusal, you can ask the fraud database or credit reference agency for the information it holds about you. If a marker is wrong, you can ask for it to be corrected or removed.
Can you open a business account with a CCJ, IVA or after bankruptcy?
Often yes, but each situation comes with different rules. The table sums up what applies and how long it stays on your record:
Situation | How long it shows on your record | What it means for a business account |
|---|---|---|
County court judgment (CCJ) | 6 years on the Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines; removed if paid in full within one month | Many providers still accept you for an account without an overdraft. Paying it off marks it as "satisfied", which looks better to lenders |
Individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) | Usually 6 years on your credit file | You can usually open an account, but credit is unlikely while the IVA is running. Check your IVA terms before taking on borrowing |
Bankruptcy (undischarged) | Usually ends after 12 months; stays on your credit file for 6 years | You can open an account, but you must tell lenders you're bankrupt before borrowing more than £500, and you can't act as a company director without the court's permission |
Disqualified director | For the length of the disqualification, shown at Companies House | You can't be a director of a company, so you can't open an account for one |
No credit history at all | Not a negative mark | Usually fine for accounts without an overdraft; providers focus on identity and business checks |
Running a business while bankrupt. If you trade as a sole trader during bankruptcy, you must tell the people you do business with the name you were made bankrupt in, and any business name you used. Some providers ask about this on the application.
Company with a director who has bad credit. A limited company has its own credit file, but providers often check directors too, especially for credit. A director's personal history alone doesn't usually stop the company opening an account without an overdraft.
What should you do if your application is declined?
Don't apply to several providers straight away. Each hard credit search is recorded, and a string of refusals can make the next application harder. Instead, work out why you were declined first:
Check your details match everywhere: your ID, address, the electoral roll and Companies House.
Get your credit reports from the three main credit reference agencies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. You have a legal right to see them for free.
Check fraud databases if you suspect a fraud marker. You can ask Cifas whether it holds a record about you.
Correct anything wrong. Ask the credit reference agency or the organisation that added the information to fix it, and add a notice of correction if there's context lenders should see.
Apply for an account without an overdraft, and choose a provider whose eligibility rules match your business type, sector and location.
If you're a sole trader and still can't get a business account, you may have a legal right to a fee-free basic bank account with the UK's nine largest providers. It's a personal account, so check whether its terms allow business use, but it gives you somewhere to receive payments while you rebuild your record.
How can you improve your business credit profile?
Your business credit profile improves over time when it shows a consistent, reliable record. These steps make the most difference:
File accounts and confirmation statements at Companies House on time. Late filing is recorded and can affect your company's credit score.
Pay suppliers and bills on time. Many business credit agencies track how quickly you pay invoices.
Keep your details consistent: the same business name and address with every provider, on your website and at Companies House.
Register on the electoral roll at your home address, which helps providers verify you.
Check your business credit file with agencies such as Experian, Equifax, Creditsafe or Dun & Bradstreet, and challenge anything incorrect.
Build a track record with a basic account first. After 6 to 12 months of steady use, many providers will consider an overdraft.
Can you get a business overdraft with bad credit?
It's harder, because an overdraft is borrowing and the provider has to decide whether your business can repay it. With a poor credit history you're more likely to be offered a lower limit, a higher interest rate, or no overdraft until the account has been open for a while.
Before you apply for credit, consider:
Whether you need it now. Opening the account without an overdraft first gives the provider a record of your income and spending to assess later.
The real cost. Compare the interest rate and any arrangement or renewal fees, and work out what you'd pay if you used the full limit for a month.
Alternatives for short gaps: invoice finance if customers pay slowly, or agreeing longer payment terms with suppliers.
Be cautious with any provider that promises credit "regardless of your credit history". Check that it's authorised on the FCA Register before you share your details.
Can a provider close your business account without warning?
Usually not without notice. Under rules in force since 28 April 2026, banks and payment providers must generally give at least 90 days' notice before closing a payment account, and explain the reasons clearly enough for you to understand them. They must also tell you how to complain, including to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
The main exceptions are where the provider suspects money laundering, terrorist financing or fraud, or must act for legal reasons, in which case it can close or restrict the account sooner. The full protections apply to consumers, microenterprises and small charities; larger businesses can agree different terms with their provider.
To reduce the risk of restrictions, keep your business details up to date, answer information requests quickly, and tell your provider in advance about large or unusual payments.
How we compare business bank accounts for bad credit
We list business bank accounts from providers we work with commercially. Our panel changes over time and doesn't cover the whole market, and no provider guarantees approval.
For every account we check the business types and sectors accepted, the checks the provider says it runs, whether an overdraft is offered, monthly fees and transaction charges, and whether your money is protected by the FSCS or safeguarded. We check details against each provider's own terms and price lists every week, and whenever a provider changes them. Partner products are shown first by default; you can sort by monthly fee instead. For more, see How We Rank.
